February 27, 2011 ABSTRACT In recent years the interdisciplinary field of Computational Social Science has developed theory and methodologies for building spatial “agent-based” social simulation (ABSS) models of human societies that are situated in ecosystems with land cover and climate. This paper explains the needs and demand for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in these types of agent-based models, with an emphasis on models applied to Eastern Africa and Inner Asia and relevance for understanding and analyzing development issues. The models are implemented with the MASON (Multi-Agent Simulator Of Networks and Neighborhoods) system, an open-source simulation environment in the Java language and suitable for developing ABSS models with GIS for representing spatial features.

A GIS Aware Agent-Based Model of Pathogen Transmission
Agent-based modeling (ABM) is quickly becoming a choice tool for researchers, as it is very adept at modeling natural phenomena. Spatial data has the ability to further increase the usefulness of an ABM. One way that this can be achieved is through the inclusion of geographical information system (GIS) data. Such integration between ABM and GIS may sound trivial, but it is difficult to do effec...
متن کاملSpatial Process and Data Models: Toward Integration of Agent-Based Models and GIS Running Title: Integrating Agent-Based Models and GIS
The use of object-orientation for both spatial data and spatial process models facilitates their integration, which can allow exploration and explanation of spatial-temporal phenomena. In order to better understand how tight coupling might proceed and to evaluate the possible functional and efficiency gains from such a tight coupling, we identify four key relationships affecting how geographic ...

The main goal of this paper is to present the conceptual framework for engaging youth in urban planning activities that simultaneously create locally meaningful positive change. The framework for engaging youth interlinks the use of IT tools such as geographic information systems (GIS), agent-based modelling (ABM), online serious games, and mobile participatory geographic information systems wi...
متن کاملA framework to specify agent-based models in geographic sciences
Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) and simulation have gained popularity in the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) domain. Despite the increasing number of models built by experts and users, it remains challenging for users to specify their models in a manner in which one can understand it. This constraint represents an inhibition to the development and acceptance of the ABM approach. In this paper, ...
